Birds from Serengeti National Park

  1. These photo's are made by Pim de Wit in the Serengeti National Park ( Tanzania, March 2006). This Park is most probably the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, famous for its natural beauty, scientific value and varied avifauna.

The park counts more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson's gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa.

The name 'Serengeti' comes from the Maasai language and appropriately means an 'extended place'. The National Park, with an area of 12,950 square kilometres, is as big as Northern Ireland, but its ecosystem, which includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Maswa Game Reserve and the Maasai Mara Game reserve (in Kenya), is roughly the size of Kuwait. It lies between the shores of Lake Victoria in the west, Lake Eyasi in the south, and the Great Rift Valley to the east. As such, it offers the most complex and least disturbed ecosystem on earth.

The Serengetic National Park is probably most famous for its annual migration of millions of white bearded wildebeest and zebra. Its high density of predators and prey make it the best wildlife reserve in Africa. Besides natural predators and hunting, the only thing that reduces the numbers of such wildlife would be diseases. Even in the protected reserve, the African Buffalo is reducing in numbers due to disease. Different diseases..airborne diseases, waterborne diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, it’s hard to find out unless experts spend time and resources investigating them. If you’re bringing your pet hunting dog to such reserves, it would be best to ensure they have a healthy dose of supplements and probiotics for dogs to guard against any of such diseases that could easily pass off from the wildlife or their faeces.
