Gemena is a town in the north west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mathurin Mandaba, an AfricaNews reporter in Gemena, took these pictures featuring daily life in the area.

Mathurin Mandaba focus on the poor state of roads, which, even before the rebellion, were already in a very poor state. The actions which most non-governmental organizations undertook as post-wart efforts were mostly directed in repairing those roads and bridges. These were damaged during the civil war.
A few months ago, the UN Peace keeping mission in the DRC joined the effort in Gemena and financed the rebuilding of the Avenue Lumumba which stretching from the city centre to the big market. This move has created jobs for young people who spend hours breaking rocks and leveling the roads.
Last year, the World Bank financed the rebuilding of some roads in the northern parts of the DRC, and two companies - Number 1 and Batipont - are at work at this moment. While the former repairs the road between Libenge and Zongo (110 Km), two towns along the Ubangui river, the latter repair the portion between Gemena and Akula (115 Km) more inland..
