The Federal Controller of Works for the Lagos division, Ejike Mgbemena said the Onikan axis of the bridge has been severely destroyed by the fire and it became expedient for the government to rebuild it. He said to do this, there may be some form of inconvenience for users of the bridge as it will be shut to both human and vehicular traffic.

The fire affected both the Command‘s Exhibit Room, which was located directly under the bridge and the Monitoring and Surveillance Department of the Zone 2 command.

Mgbemena said: “Within a few days, we will announce a restriction on the bridge because it has been seriously damaged by this fire. Government is worried about the level of abuse of its bridges, especially in Lagos State.”

The Controller told news hunters in Lagos that the fire incident had shown that government needed to take a more pro-active measure in ensuring security for all its bridges nationwide.

According to the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 2, Azubuike Udah, nobody died or was injured in the fire outbreak. He said: “I was told that the fire could have been worse if not for timely management by our men and fire fighters. But I cannot comment on the cause of the fire because as you see I am just coming in from Ogun State. We will investigate the cause and we will get back to you.”
