PURC passes utility companies for yuletide performance

    The supply of water and electricity during the 2011 yuletide was better than that of the previous year, says the sector regulator.

    The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) attributes this to the strict vigilance of its taskforce and the opportunity for utility consumers to report cases through an advertised consumer hotline.

    Director of Public Relations and External Affairs, Nana Yaa Gyantuah, says the utility companies performed creditably well in the Christmas season, though she acknowledged that a number of complaints of power outages were reported and rectified.

    According to her, challenges with transformer overloads and obsolete equipment continue to drive localized system failures.

    Nana Yaa however emphasized the need for the public to understand the dynamics of utility distribution, transmission and generation to appreciate the operational or system breakdowns.

    She also advised communities to reported problems in time and collaborate with service providers in addressing concerns.

    Though consumers can sue the utilities for poor service, she entreats people to seek compensation for poor service delivery through the PURC.
