Who is the best: Drogba? Eto'o? Essien?
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 - 14:18AfricaNewsOn December 17, FIFA made the name public of the player of the year. A shortlist is already circulating in world media and Africa is honoured by three of its best players, namely Ivorian and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, another Chelsea star Michael Essien from Ghana and Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o of FC Barcelona.
Many observers believe Africa can once again have the best FIFA player of the year, a award that Liberian legend George Weah won in 1995.
While national football associations are making their minds before casting their votes, AfricaNews is pleased to organise this discussion on who stands the greatest chance to be the best player of year 2007. Some have already expressed dissatisfaction of not seeing Togolese Emmanuel Adebayor on the list. You certainly have another name you would have liked to see on the short list.
The discussion is open.

- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 14:36Drogba has to be the best!!! What an amazing power and vision for football.www.africa-interactive.net
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 15:13Drogba is the best. His style, discipline, team spirit, speed, and efficiency create a big gap between him and the two others. He is slowing heading to the status of legend.Et in terra pax hominubus...
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 15:24Eto'o is definately the best! Drogba a legend?? Whahaha!!!
Eto'o literally brings the crowd into ecstacy!!!
Big up for Eto'o and Cameroon!!!! - Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 16:11I have to agree with Adebamgbe here, Eto'o is by far the best of these three! :-)
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 17:46Drogba is certainly the most impresive player of the three, however he joins the wrong team. His skills would be demonstrated much better if he would play for Feyenoord Rotterdam
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 18:22Drogba is the best of the three. OBVIOUSLY. Eto'o is always sick and Essien does not stand a change. Viva African Soccer!!!!!!
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 20:03Eto'o is the best.
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 20:06are you kidding me? Drogba is the man. He is awesome....
- Posted on Thursday 11 October 2007 20:34If I were to make a list, I would start with Drogba, then E'to'o and Essien at the end. Adebayor should have been added to the list
- Posted on Friday 12 October 2007 10:54Hmmm, It will not easy to choose. Anyway. I will choose for Eto'o. I like his manner to play with the ball. I will ask to the editor of Africa news to put the picture of Eto'o on the homepage in the place of the picture of Drogba.Saidou Diallo
- Posted on Friday 12 October 2007 12:06Eto'o! recently saw him playing in Pretoria, South Africa, which was great!!
- Posted on Friday 12 October 2007 12:18The above photo line- up says it all; Drogba,Eto'o then Essien. Barcelona can survive without Eto'o,but without Dogba Chelsea is dead. He is therefore, the best player in the world. His skill, commitment.leadership & overall perfomance is just out of this world!!! He can single-handedly change the game in his favour. So for me it's Drogba Drogba Drogba................. & only Drogba!!!
- Posted on Friday 12 October 2007 15:15I just can't believe we're even debating this; I mean isn't it obvious?!! Who is the "Top Drogg"? Who is the current African Footballer of the Year.? Who kept Chelsea going last season with 33 goals? Who is the 2006/2007 English premiership top goal-scorer? Is anyone still in doubt as to who is the BEST?????
Well just in case there is a 'doubting' Thomas out there,I'm glad to spell it out 4u......D.R.O.G.B.A the one & only!!! - Posted on Friday 12 October 2007 16:24For me, I thinks E`too son is the best african player. He is a team leader....
- Posted on Tuesday 16 October 2007 19:15u've forgeting Essien was the best africain player in english premiership and the best player of chelsea and had the best goal for chelsea so i think he is the man
- Posted on Friday 19 October 2007 14:57hello AFRICA,
i am not surprise at all to read comments like these. I think it is a problem from FAs to CAF and then to FIFA. The question is this.......how many defenders have won African best player? How many defenders can you count with Fabio Canavaro to have won the FIFA world best players or European best players?. If you can answer these quetions correctly you will aree with me that we are normally and regularly not fair to defenders who prevent attackers from scoring. If soccer is only about strikers then let strikers alone play soccer, period. A typical example is the BBC organized between Essien, Drogba and Aboutrika(pardon my spelling). Essien beat Drogba in that competition. Even the Egyptian beat Drogba with a lot of votes. I believe if only the public is allowed to vote for best players, midfielders and defenders would have won many of these titles. Osei Kuffour formerly of Bayern Munich won to himself a lot of awards including the best defender in the Bundesliga but never won Africa best player. Calculate the numerous chances Essien creates for Drogba to squander. Take into consideration the numerous ocassions that Essien has prevented world class strikers from scoring when he Essien plays as a defender. Essien is no doubt a versatile and what we call a utility player. He plays as an attacker, midfilder and defender and he's yet to be in the goalpost. So if a man of this calibre is competing with Drogba, the winner for me is Essien and nobody else.........Essien is by far the Best in Africa. If a striker should get over 10 chances and can only score 1 then I do not call that person a striker.
I know very objective minded people will bear with my submission. Thanks - Posted on Monday 29 October 2007 05:50Give all to Drogba. This wonderful player shall shock the world during the African nations cup with his abundant goal scoring talent.
- Posted on Saturday 12 January 2008 10:10For me Drogba has showed to all the world how amazing and complete player he in the football world. i guess even that all the other also are good players, he is the one who deserves the most the place of best player of the year.
- Posted on Monday 31 March 2008 23:16Eto'o has more class, Drogba has more skills, Essien, I have not heard of.
Hope that makes it easy. - Posted on Friday 02 May 2008 22:50It is like comparing Orange and Apple because no way there are no comparison Eto'o and Drogba in one hand (this two are offensive specialist) vs. Essien is a midfielder specialist. Before answering this question of Eto vs. Drogba, I want to know if anyone watched Chelsea vs Liverpool past Wednesday, April 30 and did you see the goals scored by Drogba? Now, I can definitely say that Drogba is the best offensive weapon at this time.
- Posted on Wednesday 04 February 2009 16:33Et'o has that unique edge. control in the air on the ground and setpieces. Make Et'o king!
- Posted on Wednesday 11 February 2009 09:14Congratulations to Emmanuel Adebayor Sheyi for African Footballer of the Year!!!!!
- Posted on Thursday 19 February 2009 15:03ESSIEN IS CERTAINLY THE BEST .THE HEAD NOT THE TAIL. HE IS SECOND TO NONE
- Posted on Friday 23 October 2009 11:44Eto'o! Although he was sold for a ridiculous price in the Zlatan (Inter/Barcelona) deal.
